As a Maple Leafs fan i am extremly dissapointed that the Maple Leafs did not make more than the one move they did on March 8th. What even make me more upset is the fact that two players that could of helped them out, Tyler Toffoli at 50% retained cost only a 2024 3rd round pick and a 2025 2nd round pick, and Matt Dumba plus a 2027 7th round pick cost Tampa only a 2027 5th round pick. I know Brad Treliving is the actual GM of the Maple Leafs but it is common knowledge he is only that by title. Brendan Shannahan is all over these decisions. I would not be surprised that Brad was willing to make some bigger moves but Brendan would not let him make them. It has been since 1967 since the Mpale Leafs have won a Stanley Cup and only have won 1 PLAYOFF ROUND in the past 20 years! If a player was going to cost a first round pic or a prospect and would have made the team better going forward, in order to win the Stanley Cup, YOU MAKE THE DAMN TRADE! Look at Vegas. The sell their picks, prospect, hell even roster players and always seem to be one of the final 4 teams every year. It obviously works. Maybe its time to take a page out of the Golden Knight’s book. What seems more apparent is it is time for MLSE to move on from Brendan Shanahan as Team President. He has done some great things for MLSE off the ice, but he has interfered with the on ice product too many time. He was the same guy who vetoed a trade with Chicago that would have sent a package including Petr Mrazek, multiple first round picks, and Matthew Knies (while he was still in college and not signed) to the Blackhawks for Brendan Hagel and Marc-Andre Fleury. Hagel instead went to Tampa and was a thorn in the Leafs side that playoff series. That was the last year of Jack Campbell in Toronto. That year the Maple Leafs had used the following goalies:
Jack Campbell
Erik Kallgren
Petr Mrazek
Michael Hutchinson
Joseph Woll
Are you telling me Flower would not have made them better? The wouldnt have got past Tampa one year earlier than they did? They couldn’t have had a realistic chance of going to the Confrence Finals minimum? Shanahan’s time has past and he needs to be shown the door after spending a decade plus in this postion. Let’s not forget he came into this job while the Maple Leafs coach was Randy Carlyle and GM was Dave Nonis. In total he has had 4 General Mnagers and 4 coaches in his tenure. There needs to be a change and with new MLSE CEO Keith Pelley starting in the next few weeks, this should be one of his changes to the orginzation.
