PLL GAME NOTES

WEEK 1 IN ALBANY, NEW YORK JUNE 3-4, 2023

SATURDAY

GAME 1: REDWOODS VS ATLAS

  • Game starts with a TD Ierlan face-off win and goal on the first shot of the game at 13 seconds into the game 1-0 Redwoods.
  • Just 21 seconds later Bryan Costable ties it up at 1 for the Atlas.
  • The game starts to settle down a bit until the Ryder Garnsey show starts, he scores his first goal of the season with 4:37 left in the first quarter to make it 2-1 Redwoods.
  • Just 28 seconds later Garnsey scores again to make it 3-1 Redwoods.
  • With 1:38 left in the quarter Xander Dickson scores to bring the Atlas back to within 1 goal to make the score 3-2 Redwoods.
  • 22 seconds left in the quarter, Ryder Garnsey scores AGAIN for his hat trick goal to make it 4-2 Redwoods at the end of the First Quarter.
  • The 2nd Quarter starts off the same way with Charlie Bertrand opening the scoring for the Redwood less than a minute into the quarter with a score of 5-2 Redwoods.
  • Atlas get a goal with 10:48 left in the quarter from Eric Law to bring the score to 6-3 Redwoods.
  • A minute later Ryder Garnsey scores again, goal #4, to regain the 3 goal lead for the Redwoods at 6-3.
  • The Atlas then mount a bit of a come back with goals from Brendan Curry, Chris Gray and another one from Xander Dickson to tie the game with 5:32 left in the half.
  • The score remains tied until Ryder Garnsey scores goal #5 with 20 seconds left in the half to make it a 7-6 Redwoods lead going into Halftime.
  • To start the 3rd Quarter/2nd half, Wes Berg scores less than a minute in to give the Redwoods a two goal lead by the score of 8-6.
  • With 8:53 left in the quarter Ryder Garnsey scores goal #6 in the game to give the Redwoods a 9-6 lead.
  • Jeff Teat and Eric Law score 2 goals for the Atlas less than a minute apart to bring it back to a 1 goal game, 9-8 Redwoods.
  • Myles Jones lets off a ripper of a shot to score and regain the two goal lead for the Redwoods making it a score of 10-8.
  • Before the end of the quarter Eric Law scores his 3rd goal of the game to bring the Atlas back to within one making it 10-9 Redwoods.
  • In the 4th and final Quarter the Redwoods come out and get goals from Jules Heningburg and two from Wes Berg to put the Redwoods up 13-9 with 8:06 left in the quarter.
  • The Atlas get two goals 34 seconds apart form Bryan Costabile and Eric Law’s 4th goal of the game to bring the Atlas to within 2 goals making the score 13-11 Redwoods.
  • Ryder Garnsey appears to score his 7th goal of the game with 5:23 left in the quarter but upon video review it was determined that there was a shot clock violation ad Ryder still had control of the ball in his stick after the shot clock hit 0 so the goal is disallowed and the score remains 13-11 Redwoods.
  • With 43 seconds left Xander Dickson scores his 3rd goal of the game to bring the Atlas to within 1 goal.
  • The Atlas could not manage to get another goal and the Redwoods hold on to win the season opener by a score of 13-12.

GAME 2: CANNONS VS ARCHERS

  • The second game of the opening weekend starts off ALOT slower than the first game. Both team goalies are making big saves, so many for that matter that Ryan Drenner had the only goal in the first quarter with 1:54 left giving the Cannons a 1-0 lead.
  • The second quarter things start to pen up more as the Archers score goals from Mac O’Keefe and Connor Maher to give them a 2-1 lead with 7:44 left in the 2nd quarter/first half.
  • The Cannons respond with goals from Marcus Holman, playing against his former team, and Matt Campbell to give them a 3-2 lead with 3:50 left in the quarter.
  • The Archers then go off with goals from Mac O’Keefe, and two goals from Connor Fields including one that has to be seen to believe, underhand between his legs while leaping in the air and the Archers have a 5-3 lead at the half.
  • To start the 3rd quarter/second half the Archers come out continuing their was and get two goals from Mac O’Keefe and Ryan Ambler to go up 7-3 and have a run of 5-0 going with 7:25 left in the quarter.
  • Marcus Holman ends the run and gets one for the Cannons less than a minute later making it 7-4 Archers.
  • Connor Fields and Connor DeSimone score two more for the Archers to regain their 5 goal lead making it 9-4.
  • Matt Kavanagh, who’s two brothers just won a NCAA men’s championship on Monday with Notre Dame, and then a 2-point goal from Marcus Holman bring the Cannons closer by making the score 9-7 Archers.
  • The Archers then get a goal from Tre Leclaire with 1:14 left in the quarter to go up by a score of 10-7.
  • In the final minute the Cannons get a goal from Chris Aslanian and then grant Ament responds for the Cannons and the 3rd quarter ends with a score of 11-8 in favour of the Archers Lacrosse Club.
  • In the 4th quarter Matt Kavanagh opens the scoring bringing the Cannons back to being down by 1 goal with it being 11-9 Archers.
  • Trey Leclaire scores shortly after and even shorter after that FOGO, Face Off Get Off, specialist Mike Sisselberger wins a face-off for the Archers and then runs down the field and scores his first professional goal and increase the Archers lead to a score of 13-9.
  • The Cannons get a Power Play goal from Ryan Drenner that was a result of some great cycle play work by the Cannons to bring them back to within 1 with a score of 13-10.
  • After this goal the Cannons make a strange decision by replacing starting goalie Adam Ghitelman, Former Archer player, with Colin Kirst.
  • The result of this switch? The Archers score on their first shot on goal after the switch with Matt Moore getting the honour to make it 14-10 Archers.
  • Cannons LC get goals from Ryan Drenner and Jonathan Donville to bring it back to a 2 goal/1possesion game making it 14-12 Archers.
  • Archers then get a goal from Connor Fields with 3:45 left in the 4th quarter to make it 15-12 Archers.
  • Ashler Nolting gets on the board for the Cannons, but then while running down the clock and trying to end the game Tom Schreiber scores a goal for the Archers that puts an end to any possible comeback and the final score is 16-13 Archers.

Day 1 of the opening weekend was quite something and day 2 starts with a 2022 PLL Championship rematch as the Waterdogs Lacrosse Club look to defend their PLL Championship while taking on the 2021 PLL Championship and 2022 PLL championship runner up Chaos Lacrosse Club at 1pm. After that game the weekend wraps up with 2 time PLL champion Whipsnakes Lacrosse Club taking on the Chrome Lacrosse Club at 3:30pm. The Waterdogs vs Chaos game can be seen on ABC and TSN in Canada. The last game can be seen on ESPN+ or TSN+ in Canada.
