Saturday May 6th, 2023 from San Juan, Puerto Rico

Hi everyone, I know it’s been a long time since I last wrote on this blog but life happens you know. I hope to write more regularly again here and I am starting again with my review of the WWE Backlash Premium Live Event from San Juan, Puerto Rico that happened tonight. The format is a little different from previous posts and will be broken down by matches and segments in bullet point form. I may change it to a different format in the future but I like it for today.

  • Match #1: Raw Women’s Championship Bianca Belair (Champion) vs Iyo Sky of Damage Cntrl.
  • Iyo Sky entrs the area after Bianca without any member of Damage Cntrl with her and the announces tease its part of possible tension between Iyo and Bayly.
  • Match starts with a lock up after about 13 seconds of nothing happening after the bell rang.
  • The crowd is very into this show and they should be since its the first WWE Premium Live Event, PLE, in Puerto Rico since New Years Revolution January 9, 2005.
  • The crowd starts to give Bianca the Heel treatment and boo all of her offence and cheer for everything that Iyo does
  • At around the 2 minute mark of the match Bianca starts to use her strength to over power Iyo and the crowd keeps giving it to Bianca the entire time.
  • At 4:15 Iyo starts her own overpowering of Biance but that does not last very long at all
  • Iyo Keeps attacking Bianca’s shoulder, and the crowd keeps cheering for Iyo the entire time.
  • 6 minutes into the match and there is still no high risk offence from Iyo Sky at all and the commentoators mention it too.
  • At 6:32 Iyo Sky gets the first pin attempt on Bianca for a two-count.
  • Iyo attempts to give Bianca a headscissors but it is reversed into a back breaker by Bianca and she keep selling the shoulder injury that Iyo caused.
  • Bianca does a military press of Iyo, but can only do it one handed and this causes her to drop Iyo directly on her face onto the mat. It looked like it could be a serious injury but looks like Iyo didnt get hurt at all and was very lucky it wasn’t serious.
  • Iyo finally goes for her first high risk offence at 10:35 of the match.
  • Bianca goes for a 450 splash but Iyo gets her legs up to block it.
  • Iyo then places Bianca into a cross face but it is reversed it into an attempted powerslam which Iyo reverses by driving Bianca’s face into the mat for a two-count.
  • At 12:56 Bianca goes for the KOD but Iyo reversed it and trows Bianca out of the ring.
  • Iyo hits a moonsault onto Bianca outside of the ring at 13:55. Iyo then get another near fall shortly after
  • At 15:20 Iyo goes for a hurricanrana on Bianca but it gets reversed into a top rope powerbomb for a two-count.
  • Damage Cntrl comes out at 16:17 and starts to cause distractions which lead to another reversed KOD into a sunset flip for a two-count.
  • Bayly distracts the ref which allows Dakota KAi to kick Bianca Belair in the face and while the champ is on the canvas, Dakota gets a hold of her braid but the ref sees this and makes her release the hold.
  • Bianca finally hits the KOD at 17:59 for the pinfall and victory over Iyo Sky to retain the Raw Wome’s Champion and also makes history as the longest raining WWE Women’s champion in the modern era.
  • After the match they have a segment in the dressing room with new LWO member Bad Bunny and Rey Mysterio. I am not sure what is discussed as it was all in spanish. At one point Savio Vega enters the fram and gifts Bad Bunny a special Kendo Stick decked out in the Puerto Rico flag.
  • The commentators then do a draft recap with the new rosters for both Raw and Smackdown as well as mentioning how certain wrestlers are also Free Agents and can appear on any show as they please. The new Rosters take effect on Monday.
  • Next they talk about and promote the World Heavyweight championship tournament that begins on Raw on Monday and then more matches on Smackdown Friday night before the finals at Night of Champions May 27 in Saudi Arabia.
  • Match #2: Seth’ Freaking” Rollins vs Omos
  • First of all, why is this match even happening? There is literally no need for this match, There was no build or a need for this match. Why is Omos even on the roster anyways? I hope this match is quick and an easy win for Seth.
  • Seth enters the match second and then gets attacked by Omos while the crowd is singing along to his entrance theme.
  • Typical start to any Omos match by having him over power his opponent and then taunt the crowd. Its part of his two moves of doom I guess.
  • 90 seconds into this match and I am wondering why it is still happening and not over yet.
  • 30 seconds later still feel the same way, actually feel like its been longer than 2 minutes for this match already.
  • At 2:30 Seth finally getss some offence in but it does not last long at all.
  • Omos and Seth are outside the ring when Omos picks up Seth and throws him over the top rope and back into the ring.
  • At this point the crowd continues to sing along with Seth’s theme as a way to cheer him on.
  • At 4:20 Seth get more offence in and this time it lasts longer than previously.
  • Omos reverses a modified pedigree into a back toss.
  • At 5:56 Seth Rollins hits a Frog Splash on Omos for a 1 count only.
  • At 7:08 Omos blocks a stomp attempt from Seth Rollins, which leads to Omos hitting a chokeslam for a two-count.
  • At this point the crowd begins a chant that sounds alot like daniel Bryan for some reason. Maybe its because they feel the same about Omos as me. Man he is useless.
  • MVP causes some interference and it allows Seth to hit two stomps onto Omos but only gets a two-count. During the MVP involvement he slip his cane into Omos but on the Stomp he trew it out of the ring almost as soon as he got it. I’m sure he was not meant to do that and he screwed up a spot.
  • At 10:32 Seth Rollins hits a stomp off the top rope to get the pinfall victory. FINALLY!!
  • I am so happy this match is over but it was about 10:32 minutes too long.
  • Rollins is a hell of a talent but not even he can make Omos look remotely like he is capable of actually having a wrestling match. Omos is a waste of space and taking up a roster spot of someone who actually deserves it.
  • If Seth Rollins wasn’t in this match, I would not have wasted my time even paying attention to a single second of it.
  • Next we have a recap of the press conference stuff involving Bad BUnny and Damien Priest to promote their Co-Main event match later in the show.
  • Match #3: Bobby Lashley vs Bronson Reed vs Austin Theory for the United States Championship
  • Lashley shoulder tackles Theory to start the match and then Reed and Lashley take turns attacking each other and then Theory before getting THeory out of the ring.
  • Reed is taken out of the ring and then Theory and Lashley square off until Reed comes in and then Reed and Theory team up against Lashley for now.
  • 2:30 in and this is already better than anything Omos did.
  • Reed takes out Theory to end their partnership after about a minute or so
  • Lashley takes out both Theory and Reed
  • 3:38 and now it’s Lashley’s turn to be out of the ring as Reed goes off the second rope to take out Lashley outside the ring, but then throws Bobby back into the ring.
  • Reed was going for a sunami but Theory takes Reed down.
  • Theory goes to attack Lashley but gets put into a hurt lock that Theory reverses into a pin for a 2 count then Reed hits the tsunami on Lashley for a two count after Theory breaks up the count.
  • Theory gets some momentum and goes for a town down on Reed but gets overpowered and hit by Reed with a power slam
  • Reed goes for a moonsault on Theory but misses, and gets speared by Lashley, Theory throws Lashley out of the ring and then pins Reed to retain the United States Championship at 6:50.
  • Video package for Night of Champions and then one on Rhea Ripley.
  • Match # 4 Smackdown Women’s Championship Rhea Ripley (Champion) of the Judgement Day against Zelina Vega from the LWO (Latino World Order)
  • Mami comes out first and looks very confident.
  • Zelina gets a loud cheer since she is of Puerto Rican descent.
  • Love the opening of the LWo theme. We need more Eddie Guerrero (R.I.P.) in WWE if you ask me.
  • Zelina’s family, minus her husband (Malakai Black in AEW), are shown in the front row hugging Zelina before the match.
  • Zelina loud cheers in her introduction and she tears up.
  • Zelina gets a sandal from her mom and throws it a Rhea.
  • Rhea reverses a hurricanrana into a powerbomb for a 2 count.
  • After overpowering Zelina for a while Rhea decides to taunt the crowd with her version of Eddie’s taunt to get heat from the Latino crowd.
  • Rhea goes shoulder-first into the ring post after Zelina moves out of the way after being thrown into the corner by Rhea after an over-a-minute attack by Rhea.
  • Rhea goes for a ripcord but Zelina reversed into a DDT and follows it up with a 619.
  • Zelina does her Eddie taunt before a double knee strike on Rhea off the second rope for a 2 count.
  • After a short offensive attack by Zelina, Rhea reverses it into a riptide and gets the pinfall victory at 7:10 to retain the Smackdown Women’s championship.
  • I guess there will be a segment when Rhea and Bianca will switch Titles since they are on the other brand as of Monday.
  • After Rhea exits the ring, Zelina gets a standing ovation from the Puerto Rico crowd.
  • This match was great and compared to Omos it would be a 100-Star match, Sorry Seth you deserve so much better than Omos.
  • Video package for a new Netflix show for Arnold involving various WWE superstars including the Brawling Brutes before the ad for the show.
  • The Judgment Day video package airs after.
  • Video package for the Bad Bunny and Damien Preist match.
  • Match #5 Co-Main Event San Juan Street Fight between Damien Priest of the Judgement Day and Bad Bunny now of the LWO.
  • Damien Preist is wearing all white Cory Greaves said Damien told him it’s because He, Damien, is the hero in this match.
  • Bad Bunny comes out to a loud cheer and brings a shopping cart full of weapons with him to the ring.
  • Michael Cole says that both Priest and Bad BUnny are from the same town and that this Premium Live Event means a lot to them and the people.
  • Damien Priest and Bad Bunny square off before Damien throws Bunny down to the canvas
  • Bad Bunny hits a Mitchunokou driver for a one-count just over a minute into the match.
  • Damien Priest breaks a kendo stick that Bunny had and starts to overpower Bunny more and taunt him.
  • Bad Bunny keeps trying offensive moves but Priest reverses them
  • Damien Priest hits a choke slam at 4:22 and then pulls Bunny up off the canvas after a two-count to continue the match.
  • After Damien Priest throws a weapon away, bad Bunny hits Preist with a chair and starts his comeback.
  • Bunny keeps attacking Priest with every weapon he can grab including garbage can lids and kendo sticks.
  • Bad Bunny hits a falcon arrow on Priest for a 2 count @ 8:40.
  • At 9;25 Priest starts to walk to the back and after BUnny chased after him, Priest turned around and starts his attack on Bunny again but with weapons this time including the Kendo Stick from Savio Vega.
  • At around the 11:00 minute mark in the match they begin to fight each other in the crowd.
  • At the tech area Priest and Bunny begin to fight on top of the equipment before Priest drives Bunny through tables onto the floor after a drop of over 10 feet with a Falcon Arrow of his own.
  • They tease that Bad Bunny can not continue but Priest says “He’s not done because I’m not done” before picking Bunny up and carrying him back to ringside to continue the match.
  • Bad Bunny mounts an attack on Priest focused on his knee and ankle trying to chop Priest down in size by attacking it with weapons.
  • Priest then while on the mat begs for forgiveness to stop Bunny before then hitting Bunny with a kick to the face.
  • Bad Bunny hits a low blow and then the Judgement Day runs out to attack Bad Bunny.
  • After about 20 seconds Rey Mysterio comes out but then Carlito comes out to even the odds wearing a LWO shirt.
  • After Carlito hits Balor he takes a bite out of his apple before Dominik attacks him from behind then Rey hits a 619 on Dominik.
  • While retreating to the back Savio Vega, Rey Mysterio, and Carlito surround Balor and Dominik.
  • The rest of the LWO comes out too. So now it’s a 6-on-2 attack by the baby faces on the heels.
  • Savio and Finn face off and Savio hits his smacks and kicks before doing the same to Dominik and then everyone goes to the back.
  • In the ring Bad Bunny puts Priest into a figure four after Priest’s leg gives out on him while trying to attack Bad Bunny from behind
  • Priest gets out and goes for a choke slam but it gets reversed into a pin for a 2 count.
  • Damien Preist goes face-first into a chair then Bad Bunny hits a Sliced Bread number 2 for a 2 count.
  • Bad Bunny then does a chair attack on Priest before hitting a Canadian Destroyer on Priest for the pinfall victory at 25:03.
  • Every time I see Bad Bunny wrestle I can’t help but be amazed. He is not a trained professional wrestler but he always performs well and pulls off some amazing matches. Which is more than I can say about Omos.
  • The LWO comes back out to the ring with Puerto Rico flags and celebrates in the ring with Bad Bunny.
  • I must say I am disappointed Carlito did not spit in the face of people who don’t want to be cool. HHH why did you rob us of that?
  • Video package and more promotion for Night of Champions on May 27 from Saudia Arabia air.
  • The video package for the Six-man (or Trios) tag team match airs.
  • Match #6 Six-man tag match: Kevin Owens, Sami Zayn, and Matt Riddle vs The Bloodline (The Uso’s and Solo Sikoa, aka Rikishi’s kids)

  • The show ends with Brock in the ring cleaning the blood off himself with a towel in disbelief as Cody exits to the back and the recap of the Premium Live Event video airs.

Overall I would say the show was ok. The matches delivered what was expected and did good to end some storylines, except for the Omos and Seth Rollins crap. It was you typical WWE Premium Live Event and nothing really special except for the fact it was in Puerto Rico. They shoudl return there more in the future as the crowd was hot for the entire night, even during the Omos travisty of a “Match” if you can call it that. Again I feel so bad for Seth Rollins because he is so much better than this and deserves so much more. Seth could have had a better match with a wet paper bag honestly.
